ERP vs Tally: Which One Does Your Business Actually Need?

If you run an Indian business, there's a very high chance you're on Tally. Tally Prime or Tally ERP 9 handles your accounting, GST returns, payroll, and basic inventory. It works. Your accountant knows it. So when someone suggests you need a "full ERP," your natural question is: what does that add, and do I actually need it?

The honest answer: it depends entirely on what your biggest operational problem is.

What Tally Does Well

Tally is an accounting-first tool. It's outstanding at:

• Voucher entry (sales, purchase, receipt, payment, journal)
• GST returns (GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, reconciliation)
• Payroll and salary processing
• Bank reconciliation
• Balance sheet and P&L reports
• Basic stock tracking (item-wise, location-wise)

For a business that primarily needs these functions, Tally is genuinely excellent. It's fast, reliable, widely understood by Indian accountants, and reasonably priced.

What Tally Doesn't Do

Tally is not designed for operational management. The workflows it doesn't support include:

• Sales pipeline management: There's no concept of an enquiry, quotation with approval workflow, follow-up tracking, or pipeline visibility in Tally. Sales happen entirely outside the system.
• Project tracking: Tally has no concept of a project with phases, tasks, owners, and deadlines. If your business delivers projects (manufacturing orders, construction, IT services, consulting), this is a major gap.
• Procurement workflow: You can record a purchase voucher in Tally, but you can't manage the procurement process — vendor comparison, PO approval, GRN against PO, quality check before acceptance.
• Quality management: No quality inspection module, no NCR system, no QC checkpoint at each production stage.
• Dispatch and logistics: Tally can generate a delivery challan, but there's no linked dispatch planning, transport tracking, or delivery confirmation.
• Customer portals: Tally is an internal tool. Customers can't check order status or download invoices from a self-service portal.
• Real-time dashboards: Tally reports are point-in-time snapshots, not live dashboards. Building real-time operational visibility on Tally requires third-party tools.

The Three Scenarios

Scenario 1: You Only Need Better Accounting

If your main issue is accounting, GST compliance, or payroll — stick with Tally. It does these things better than most full ERP systems. An ERP built from scratch will have weaker accounting than Tally simply because accounting is Tally's entire focus.

Scenario 2: You Need Operations Management + Keep Tally for Accounts

This is the most common scenario for Indian SMEs with 20–200 employees. Operations run on Excel and WhatsApp — orders, projects, procurement, dispatch — while Tally handles accounts. 1. Sales team raises quotations and converts them to orders in the ERP
2. Purchase team raises POs and records GRNs in the ERP
3. Dispatch team generates challans and records delivery in the ERP
4. Finance team generates GST invoices in the ERP
5. Invoice, expense, and receipt data syncs automatically to Tally as vouchers
6. Accounts team does reconciliation, GST returns, and reports in Tally as usual
